CIRCA (Creative Industries' Research Centre Amsterdam) hosts an afternoon of presentations to introduce the concept of 'embedded research', in which innovative academic researchers cooperate with the Creative Industries sector.

In November 2011, Jan Simons (University of Amsterdam; Media studies) and Sebastian Olma ( Serendipity Lab) were asked to design a creative industries research program for the University of Amsterdam’s (UvA) Faculty of the Humanities. The outcome of their cooperation is CIRCA: a research program of the Faculty of Humanities of the UvA which mobilises and innovates the humanity’s rich research tradition within the creative industries by adopting a new research practice: ‘embedded research.’

Embedded research entails the placement of researchers for 9-12 months in companies and institutions pertaining to the creative industries where they work as professionals. The objective is for the researcher to make humanities based research contributions to the development of a specific product or service.

Established partners of CIRCA so far include the Amsterdam Economic Board (previously ‘AIM’), Appsterdam, Mediamatic, Frog, Urban Resort, Submarine, Flight 1337 and Virtueel Platform.

The Event
This event is your chance to experience presentations by some of the brightest and most innovative researchers the UvA has to offer. CIRCA’s partners will share the experience of having an embedded researcher in their organization. Carolien Gehrels (Creative Industries, City of Amsterdam) will reflect on the role of CIRCA for Amsterdam’s creative industries policy. Frank van Vree (Dean Humanities UvA) will tell you how all this innovative research relates to the time-honoured humanities. Finally, there will be a podium discussion with our partners and special guest Victor van der Chijs (Head Top Team Creative Industries).
