Cluster 2020 partners meet in MediaCityUK

17 DECEMBER 2012

Cluster 2020 held its second European Partner meeting in MediaCityUK which was attended by representatives from business clusters in Germany, France and Belgium, as well as the European Commission’s DG Enterprise and Industry.

The Creative England-sponsored scheme Cluster 2020 is developing excellence in business support tools by looking at the role that knowledge-intensive clusters play in driving innovation, regional development and competitiveness.

The purpose of the meeting was to review progress on the Cluster 2020 project, but it was also a chance to showcase one of the UK’s flagship digital and creative industries clusters, MediaCityUK, and learn from its successes. The partners enjoyed a tour of dock10 studios, the BBC, Salford University, and The Landing, MediaCityUK’s newly launched incubation and facilities space.

Carsten Schierenbeck, Policy Officer at the European Commission’s ‘Clusters and Support for SMEs’ unit, summarised his experience at MediaCityUK:

“Salford/Manchester is a showcase of how a former traditional industrial district can be rejuvenated through the transformative power of the creative industries. MediaCityUK has brought together different actors and policies to address this challenge in an effective manner. For its continuous success, it is important that the infrastructure investments made to strengthen the creative industries are complemented by support measures and incentives aimed at unlocking the full entrepreneurial potential in the area.

The Cluster2020 partnership of the European Creative Industries Alliance is providing an important contribution to this by introducing new forms of SME support services in the fields of incubation, co-working, and SME internationalisation, which encourage cross-sectoral linkages and help companies to grow faster.”
