New call for proposals on “European Creative Districts” & Information session

29 MARCH 2012

A call for proposals on "European Creative Districts" has just been published on the DG Enterprise and Industry webportal. The call shall support two large-scale demonstrators that aim at demonstrating the transformative power of creative industries for the rejuvenation of traditional industrial regions. DG Enterprise & Industry organises an information session on 12 April 2012.

European Creative District
The “European Creative Districts” will support traditional industrial regions in their transition from a traditional economy with strong “heritage” value and cultural identity to a sustainable and innovative economy. This notably includes the promotion of all forms of creativity and the better use of service innovation and creative industries to stimulate structural change for cultural, craft and manufacturing-based industry. In this respect, the “European Creative Districts” should, on the one hand, address the specific needs of innovative creative industries companies to strengthen their capacity to innovate and grow and, on the other hand, stimulate the demand for their services by companies or organisations from other sectors with a view to boosting the role of creative industries as a catalyst for regional development.

This call will be implemented through a two-stage procedure: In a first stage (deadline 4 May 2012), interested regional organisations are requested to submit only a short “concept note” on their vision to transform traditional industrial regions through a more strategic use of their creative potential. The winners of this first round will be invited to submit a full proposal by 3 August 2012 for following a “large scale demonstrator” approach that is similar to the approach of the related European Creative Industries Alliance, yet with a regional focus. As this is a pilot project, only two proposals will be awarded a grant with a maximum EU co-financing of € 500,000 each.

A second chance to capitalise on the “transformative power” of service innovation in general, and of creative industries in particular, will be offered by the selection of six model demonstrator regions that will benefit, free of charge, from the advisory support services of the “European Service Innovation Centre”. The Centre will be established in 2012 through a separate call for tenders (deadline 4 May 2012) that will bring together a pool of experts to support the model demonstrator regions. A Call for the Expression of Interest for the selection of six model demonstrator regions has been published by DG Enterprise and Industry on 13 March 2012 and is still open until 15 June 2012.

Deadline
Stage 1 deadline for submission of concept notes: 4 May 2012.
